چکیده

ÐBiological treatment of a piggery wastewater for organic carbon and nitrogen removal in a combined anaerobic±aerobic system was investigated using two laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors. The cycle length was 24 h. In the anaerobic reactor, fed with raw wastewater and recycling from the aerobic reactor, denitri®cation followed by anaerobic digestion of organic carbon was observed. In the aerobic reactor, more organic carbon removal and ammonia oxidation to mainly nitrite occurred. Denitri®cation was also observed in the aerobic reactor during the ®lling period, when mixed liquor dissolved oxygen concentration was very low. Three recycle-to-in ̄uent ratios from 1 to 3 were tested. Average performances of the overall process, in the di€erent conditions tested, were a TOC removal of 81 to 91% and 85 to 91% of TKN. 10 to 28% of the initial TKN was discharged as NNOx because of the low recycle-to-in ̄uent ratios used. The higher the recycle-to-in ̄uent ratio, the lower the concentrations of nitrogen oxides in the ®nal e‚uent. However, the e€ect of this ratio was attenuated by the phenomenon of denitri®cation in the aerobic reactor which increased the performances of the process. # 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. ÐThe need for readily biodegradable organic matter to support denitri®cation and enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) can be satis®ed using external or internal carbon sources. This paper examines the production and removal of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), mainly acetic acid, and other hydrolyzed products from sludge using hydrothermal treatment at subcritical (<3748C) and supercritical...

ÐMicrobial pathogens are one of the major health risks associated with water and wastewaters. Current methods for the detection of pathogenic viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths tend to be inaccurate, time consuming and expensive. As a result, indicator bacteria are commonly used to determine the relative risk of faecal contamination and the possible presence of pathogens in water and was...

Breaking down the time limit constraints for conventional compression–permeation (C–P) cell test, this work has, for the first time, experimentally evaluated the cake characteristics of viable wasteactivated sludge subject to polyelectrolyte flocculation and to freeze/thaw treatment under a pressure range of 25–200 kPa. There exists a threshold pressure exceeding which the cake structure would ...

Batch and continuous experiments were conducted to study the influence of dairy wastewater strength (2–30 g-COD/L) on acidification at pH 5.5 and 378C. Results of batch experiments showed that carbohydrate was preferentially acidified as compared to protein and lipid. Production of VFAs (mainly acetate, propionate and butyrate) and hydrogen corresponded to carbohydrate acidification, whereas pr...

ÐBiosorption of Cd by biomass of the brown seaweeds Durvillaea, Laminaria, Ecklonia and Homosira presaturated with Ca, Mg or K was coupled with the release of these light ions. The feasibility of biomass pre-treatment to develop a better biosorbent was evaluated by its biosorption performance, the degree of its component leaching (measured by the weight loss and TOC) as well as by the number of...
